mission statement

The Girls Build team at Sylmar Charter High School is made up of a group of young women who want to make an impact in their community, whose members believe in the power of literacy and action to improve their communities and our world. The purpose of the Girls Build team is to spread awareness about the importance of pre-registration, registration, voter turnout, and to cultivate sustained civic engagement. The objectives of the team are to prepare students for academic, professional, and personal success.

project need

This team is needed for young people and the community to learn how to make their voice heard in democracy, learn how government and politics affect their daily lives, and learn about the candidates and issues.

process

The specific events that the Girls Build team will host are a voter registration drive and a conference for young women to enhance their leadership potential.
We will also host monthly events to inform students of the importance of volunteering, knowing their representatives, becoming involved with civic issues, and empowering students with the skills they need to be successful in the real world.

Sylmar CHS' Girls Build Club meets at least every Friday during lunch to plan, prepare and innovate new ways of sparking motivation within the community and empowering young leaders! We have hosted empowering events to for students develop valuable and necessary skills to succeed in the future!

Events: We held our Student Empowerment Conference on April 26, 2019. We wanted to provide students with an opportunity to meet professionals who are in different fields of career interest, and for students to learn about college. We had a College & Career Fair, where many different types of majors and career fields were represented. We also had various professionals host workshops yoga, real estate, teen safety, study skills, etc. to engage students in personal development. We received positive feedback from students, staff members, and the community on how the event had a positive impact on students. We collected surveys from students to gain their feedback for our events and to learn how to increase our impact each year.
Other events we have held for our school included “Flower Power” which was meant to promote our club but to also promote kindness and school pride. This event consisted of us giving out free popcorn, pens, stickers and other prizes during lunch time. We had a “female empowerment” music playlist for students to listen to while we also promoted our club to students. The second part to the event was when we made flower pens and gave them to all teachers and other staff members to thank them for their contributions to the campus. These flower pens were personally given to teachers and staff members by our club members,
We held Job Readiness Workshops in February, and partnered with FamilySource  to teach resume and job-skills to students.
One of the last events that we will host are a voter registration drive for the Special Elections on June 4. We will continue to inform community members and students on the power of voting and engaging in their civic duty.
OUTCOMES: Many of the students who participated in our workshops for the student empowerment conference stated that they learned new life skills and were motivated to continue to improve their leadership potential. We have students who have also reached out to us on how they can join girls build as they have seen our impact! Our teachers, principal, and other staff members have promoted our events, and many of our events and accomplishments have been shared on our school website! (sylmarhs.org)
REFLECTION: We hope to provide workshops to 9th and 10th graders on how they can have an impact early on in their high school careers. we will reach out to more students on the types of skills or workshops they would like to participate in. We will also reach out to teachers and community members on topics they believe would be beneficial to students.
