retreat

January 21, 2023
We started off our retreat with some delicious bagels donated by Western Bagels, and got to enjoy other yummy breakfast items. During the retreat, we played games to get to know each other and to strengthen our team.
We brainstormed ideas on the types of events we wanted to host at school. Since our focus is on Sustainability, we shared ideas on upcycling. We also planned other types of events we would want to do for volunteering in the community and for our team to learn new leadership skills.

We decided to focus on our Thrift Shop for the spring semester. After the Thrift Shop, we planned to host our Sustainability Fair where we would have different stations to educate students and to have fun activities.

Thrift Shops (held in the Fall and Spring): About 500 students participated in our thrift shops and were able to receive clothing, shoes, and other items for free!

Our Sustainability Fair focused on how to encourage students to focus on upcycling or taking care of our environment. Number of students that participated in this event: 50 students

The stations we had were:
-Recycling/sorting station: students were taught what items could be composted and the types of bins to sort waste or for recycling.

Other stations we had were:
-Tote bag station: Students picked Iron On Patches and we helped to iron their design onto tote bags!
-Repurposed Scrunchies: Scrunchies made by one of our members, Bianca, who used worn shirts to make scrunchies

Tie Dye Station: We used Sei Tie Dye which is ready to use and non-toxic.

Our last event will be on May 20th and is a collaboration with Tia Chucha's Centro Cultural & Bookstore. Their event, Celebrating Words Festival, will feature community resources, creative workshops for students and adults, 1300 new books for free giveaway, and other fun activities.
