Pay-It-forward campaign
This campaign was created to promote kindness among students and people in our community. We want to make an impact and help those who are affected by homelessness.

Research
The first portion of our campaign consisted of a survey to assess the needs of our students at Sylmar Charter HS. The survey was made up of 10 questions that sought feedback from students on how we can create a positive school environment, supplies needed, barriers to attendance, and coping strategies desired for stress/anxiety/depression. The data provided information to us about the supplies that students needed. Our Pay It Forward campaign will start on campus on March 18, 2020 where we will have school supplies, hygiene items, mindfulness activities, community resources, free popcorn, and live music!
STUDENT SURVEY RESULTS
We decided to purchase the items that were in high demand such as pencils, pens, and notebooks and provide these to students during a lunch event on campus. We also purchased Passion Planners to help students with time management.
We planned to give out lotion to students as this was the hygiene item that was most requested by students, and also provide Bamboo Toothbrushes donated from Plus Ultra and toothpaste. This event will also have informational booths for college/career readiness, mindfulness, stress reduction, and community resources.
*Note: The items were purchased, but due to the school closure, the school supplies will be given to students at a later time when it is safe to do so.*
We will also create an online form that students can fill out and request additional support from staff for hygiene items, clothing, or transportation.

Short-Term Outcomes
The second portion of our campaign highlights the importance of giving back to the community. We hosted a clothing/canned food drive at our school and have promoted our drive using social media and community outreach. As of March 13, 2020, we have collected approximately 720 items of clothing and 221 misc items (handbags, hats, shoes, etc). We will organize the items and prepare for them to be delivered to the community agencies when it is safe to do so. By providing clothing and other items to people in need, we will be able to provide our community much needed support.
Our team will also prepare 300 hygiene kits- these will be donated to various organizations in the community such as shelters, transitional housing agencies, and non-profit organizations. We used some of our $1000 grant to purchase items such as lotion, soap, shampoo, conditioner, and facial tissue for our hygiene kits and we will also use the money from our various fundraisers (about $1400) to purchase other items that are needed. We also have donations from a New Smile Dental Group and the Better Money Habits program.
Items that will be included in our hygiene kits (travel-size): Toothpaste, Toothbrush, Floss, Facial Tissue, Soap, Shampoo, and Conditioner.

Long-Term OUtcomes
One long-term outcome we expect is for students to participate in civic engagement by learning about the importance of voting, being active in their community and advocating for others, and by helping others who are in need.
Another long-term outcome we expect is for our community to receive more resources from voting efforts, the census, and continued donations from community members.

REFLECTION
During this school year, the members of Girls Build LA have grown to be more aware of the needs of our community. Through the leadership and guidance of our second year members, the team was able to thrive in community service and civic engagement. Many of the members have mentioned that they are confident in their abilities and have learned a lot from their participation in events targeted for young women. Our team has been successful in many areas such as the fundraiser for the Homecoming Game, where we were the first group to sell out of drinks, and our fundraiser for the Pancake Breakfast, where we were the 2nd highest selling team. Members of the team have thrived in volunteering- after volunteering at the Children's Hunger Fund, our members were looking forward to volunteering again after our wonderful experience with the organization. This is the first year that we had male students interested in being part of our team, and we were surprised when they stepped up to coordinate the clothing drive and folding/storage of the clothes. Overall, we've had a positive impact on the mindset of not only our members, but also our staff and community have seen that many of our youth are invested in creating change.
