Project Need (why was this project selected?)
Process (How did the team conduct their work throughout the year?)
Team Planning
- What problem did your team solve/address? We chose to focus on Health & Wellness because we have found that students are still struggling with the transition from distance learning to in-person learning, struggling to find motivation to attend school, pass classes, or engage with peers. We focused on having events to promote student engagement, improve student equity (clothing, hygiene items, etc) and promote voter registration.
- How is this need aligned with your impact area? Due to the pandemic, more people are faced with economic hardships, mental health concerns, and health issues. Through our events, we hope to encourage students to reach out to friends, teachers, counselors, and engage with more people.
- What research did you do to find out what has come before or already exists?
- How did you identify the problem that you wanted to solve? We conducted a survey to find out if students were engaging with peers and how they felt about returning to school.
- What evidence (observational data, test scores, or research) did you use to identify this issue? Grades for students at school and a student survey.

Team Planning
- Guiding Questions:
- Please explain how, where, and what you did to plan your project. We met weekly on Fridays during lunch to plan our events.
- What are your team’s top achievements from the GirlsBuild project? What evidence have you collected to share (use of data)? Impact Report template Our top achievements are hosting 2 "Thrift Shop" events where students were able to choose from free items- clothing, shoes, backpacks, hygiene items. Our event was successful and popular, students have asked us to host more events like these.
- Guiding Questions:
- What are the short term outcomes (qualitative and quantitative) to affect change in the community or with the students?
- About 200-400 students participated in our Thrift Shop events. We hosted the event during lunch and after-school, once a semester. We also handed out 200 bags with hygiene items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo/conditioner, and socks.
- What will be in the long term outcomes to the community? Through our voter registration drive, we hope to engage students to learn the importance of voting to help improve our community.
- Reflection
- Think back on the direction your project took over the course of the year. What was surprising, or what would you have done differently if you had to do it all over again? Is there anything else that you want to share with judges? While we initially wanted to help students improve their self-image, we found it hard to engage students in after-school events. We decided to host our Thrift Shops to help students with their self-image through clothing, and to also provide necessary items to students. Our last event, which will be on May 24, will include several stations: Free Passion Planners (time management tool), Free DIY crafts, Free books (The Four Agreements, You Sound Like a White Girl, Girls Who Green the World, Heartstopper, Clever Girl Finance), Free school spirit pins, and Voter Registration Drive. We plan to host more events next school year to engage students such as a Clubs Day to promote student clubs on campus.
