Day 2: Held on Zoom!
We decided to form three teams. Since our focus is on Health & Wellness, each team covers different dimensions based on the Eight Dimensions of Wellness. We had 3 breakout rooms to brainstorm. We had about 45 minutes to brainstorm individually and as a team. We used the Personal, School and Community Impact graphic organizer to write what we want our impact to be.

2020-2021 Project
TeamMISSION: Our mission for this year’s project is to provide students at our school with the opportunity to learn about situations they will face during, if not soon after, graduating high school.
PROJECT NEED: Team 1 created a survey for adults to identify topics they wished they had learned about during their high school years. From this survey, we identified topics that students could possibly be interested in. We created a survey specifically for students to gauge interest in these topics. We were able to confirm that students lack knowledge when it comes to topics such as post-graduation life, taxes, resume building, finances, and more.
TEAM PLANNING: We held weekly meetings on Zoom. Responsibilities were divided based on interest, and members were divided into 2 teams. We had 1 team leader for each team to make sure we had tasks divided, items for our video ready, and kept on task. Team 1 focused on creating Zoom workshops on different topics and Team 2 focused on our website and podcast on spirituality. Team 2 website can be found here: https://girlsbuildsylmar.weebly.com/spirituality.html
TEAM EVENTS: Team 1 created a survey to gauge student interest for different topics. We focused on having Zoom workshops with different guest speakers- our series was called “From GirlsBuild to You.” We partnered with Bank of America’s Better Money Habits program to teach students about finances. The target audience for these workshops included students who are identified as Newcomers or English Learners. The workshops were held in English and Spanish, February-May, every Friday during advisory. Other workshops we had were on how to create a Resume, Scholarships & Financial Aid, Vocational school programs/pathways, email etiquette, car basics, navigating college, etc. Team 2 created a page on our website to discuss spirituality and different methods to help promote a positive mindset. The page includes tips for test anxiety, breathing practices and calming techniques, and our podcast to share student experiences of handling school during a pandemic.
CIVIC ENGAGEMENT: We are committed to continue with last year’s project that included a clothing drive to collect clothing and other items for the homeless population. This year, our focus was on outreach for sponsorship and donors. We recently were awarded with a $500 grant from Bank of America and received a donation of $500 from a donor to continue with our goal to purchase socks, underwear, blankets, and more hygiene items.

IMPACT REPORT/OUTCOMES: For our finances series, we had 50 students attend weekly from February to May. The students reported that they found the information beneficial to them and would recommend it to their peers. Some of the feedback we received included that other students should learn about finances to prepare their financial future, make better decisions, learn different way money works, how to save money and pay off debt. Our finances series will be ending in late May and we will collect data to compare from the pre-survey that students took. Another important part of our project is to make sure students are academically prepared. We purchased 150 Passion Planners to help students focus on their classes but to also use it to create goals and stay committed to reaching their goals. Our goal will be to host workshops on how to best utilize the Passion Planner.
EVIDENCE: The evidence we have collected includes the three google forms (adult survey, student survey, pre-survey for finances) and we will be collecting data for our post-surveys at the end of May for our finances series. We are continuing to collect data for students who attend our workshop through a post-survey as well. We keep track of the attendance for our workshops and also collect student feedback from the Zoom chat feature.
REFLECTION:This year hasn’t been easy and many of the students on the team faced many obstacles to stay engaged with school. Through this project, students were able to identify student needs and we were able to connect with several guest speakers. Some of the guest speakers we connected with are actually Sylmar Charter HS Alumni and it was a great networking experience for our team. We held our Zoom workshops during Advisory and a few after-school hours. Due to the hectic school schedule, balancing school, work, and home responsibilities, we did not get the student participation as we had hoped for our after-school workshops (average 10 students per workshop). We think that a possible solution will be for us to record the guest speaker doing a pre-recorded presentation and then showing the presentation to all students during advisory periods.
